The tensile-strength test is inherently damaging; in the process of gathering data, the sample is destroyed. Though this is not an issue when a good sample of the material exists, nondestructive methods are desirable for materials that are dear or difficult to make up or that have been formed into completed or semicompleted items.
Liquids
One common nondestructive procedure, employed to detect surface breaks and flaws in samples, takes a penetrating liquid, which needs to be luminescently dyed or fluorescent. After being smeared on the surface of the sample and allowed to soak into any tiny imperfections, the fluid is rubbed away, leaving easily visible imperfections and flaws. Another such test, better for nonmetals, takes an electrically charged fluid pasted on the nonmetal surface. After excess fluid is cleaned off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the nonmetal and sinks into the cracks. Neither of these tests, however, can detect internal imperfections.
Radiation
Internal, like external weaknesses, can be identified with X-ray or gamma-ray tests in which the radiation passes through the object and impinges on an ideal photographic film. On some occasions, it may be possible to nominate the X rays to a significant part in the piece, permitting a 3rd dimensional view of the flaw identity as well as its location.
Sound
Ultrasonic inspection of parts takes transmission of sound waves higher than human hearing range through the sample. By the reflection technique, a sound wave is targeted over one end of the material, reflected by the opposite area, and signalled onto a receiver that is situated at the beginning side. When finding a flaw or failure in the sample, the sound wave is reflected and its movement adapted. The actual delay then becomes a measure of the location of the crack; a map of the material can be created to show the area and dimensions of the flaws. In the through-transmission process, the transmitter and receiver are started at opposite areas of the material; delays in the signal of the sound waves are utilized to find and measure weaknesses. More often than not a water medium is utilized through the use of which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.
Magnetism
As the magnetic aspects of a material are largely shown by its overall shape, magnetic processes can be used to measure the location and indicative dimensions of flaws and breaks. With magnetic testing, an item is employed that contains a large coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Nested inside this initial piece is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is linked an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the larger coil makes further current to react within the secondary coil through the process of induction. When an iron sample is inserted within the secondary coil, sudden changes in the secondary current will isolate flaws in the piece. This technique only finds changes in zones within the length of a rod and will not locate longer or continued defects very easily. An analogous method, utilizing eddy currents induced in a primary coil, also should be employed to detect imperfections and weaknesses. A steady current is induced within the test sample. Cracks that are found within the track of the current determine resistance of the test piece; this change can be measured under appropriate equipment.
Infrared
Infrared processes also have been used to find material continuity in complicated construction materials. While testing the strength of adhesive conjoinments in the sandwich core and facing sheets with a usual sandwich construct object like plywood, for example, heat is applied to the surface of the sandwich skin item. In the case where bond lines are continuous, the core parts allow a heat marking on the surface object, and the local temperatures of the skin should fall steadily along the bond lines. In the case where that bond line may be inadequate, missing, or faulty, however, temperature can not fall. Infrared photography of the front does indicate the location and geometry of the erroneous adhesive. A similar process employs thermal coatings that will change appearance when reaching a set degree.
