The typical question customers ask when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and types available, it can be difficult for customers to pick between those technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors provide far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph tells you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up an equal grade of image quality.
Think of a set of blinds in your household for your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the point at which the projector turns on to when the image reaches your screen is extremely important with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your wall simultaneously. The way a DLP projector operates is vastly different and even the produced image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of projecting an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then draw each coloured element of the image into the total image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the top level of brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at a time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have placed a white segment in the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this then detracts from colour accuracy.
I find in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior quality. For those who are unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications compared to many LCD projectors. At a glance, this appears to be a benefit, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being utilised. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you want to view has moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this problem because the colours are processed at once. DLP designers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up artifacts, but the price tag of these projectors make them impractical for the majority of businesses and consumers.
Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how various colours of light refract various amounts when projected through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light at different levels. Generally with a DLP projector, an extra yellow colour will appear above and some extra blue will show below an image of something as simple as a single black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to reduce these effects on the projected image, because each colour is projected on separate LCD panels.
The sole actual advantage (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant with regard to mobility and has to be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is important to you, then the answer is simple. Go for an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely produce bright, colourful images with fewer image mistakes. As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht became a leisure craft used initially by royalty and secondly by the burghers on the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, coming out of private matches. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), built more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting rose as fashionable with the affluent and royalty, but after that period the fashion did not last.
The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and held great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club went on, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after conglomerating with other organisations, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was seen in some ordered manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to sovereignty in 1820, it was named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continued setting of British racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the ascension of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great bids were held, and the society life was splendid. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.
In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English gained power. Sailing was mostly for fun and found its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and set a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts took the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The craft of bigger yachts was first heavily put upon by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a club led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in the modern sense, with only a model for an outline. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the science of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what science had already done for hulls.
Because most of all sailboats had been individually built, there was a requirement for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was created, which is found in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the rapidly flourishing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for these boats can be held on an even keel with no handicapping required. A prime example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class adopted for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
So long as yachting was done mostly for the royal and the rich, expense was no object, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller craft came in the second half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the hardiness of smaller boats. Following this in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and leisure yachts became more common, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, at which point steam was set to replace sail power in commercial boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed increasingly in pleasure boats. Large power yachts were progressed to a high standard, and long-distance travel became a fond activity of the rich. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to yachts powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. Like naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for many years. By the later half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.
In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service for World War II.
As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many bigger craft began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, was furthered during World War I. In the decade following that, large power-yacht creation blossomed, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that period the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The construction of large power yachts fell away from 1932, and the style from then was toward smaller, less pricey yachts. From World War II, a lot of small naval craft were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting has become a internationally beloved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and upkeeping their own small recreational craft. The number of yachts and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.
